A little history :
Baby clothes have greatly evolved over time, to move towards more comfort. The child no longer forms a single block, with his jersey.
From the beginning of the 20th century, the medical profession began to make recommendations on the baby’s position for bedtime. If today, it is recommended that the child falls asleep on his back, for a long time, it was customary to put the baby on his stomach in his bed, then on his side. The newborn needs a wardrobe that provides real freedom of movement.
At all times, children spit, drool, regurgitate and vomit. To preserve their outfit, children wear a bib, to eat but also in everyday life, from the middle of the 19th century.
Bibs from the 1900s are large cotton or linen ruffs, embroidered and with lace edging. Richelieu embroidery is used on the bibs: it requires cutting the fabric. Some models resembled breastplates, which were tied at the neck and waist.
From 1910, a bib model appeared: the American bib, in the shape of a square with 2 extended legs. The closing system varies: either a tie to tie around the child’s neck, a button or a pressure. Today, Velcro is the most popular method of attachment. It appeared around the 1950s and is still found on many current bibs.
